Opening up the data – an update to BioMed Central’s Copyright and License Agreement

Opening up the data – an update to BioMed Central’s Copyright and License Agreement
Alison Mercer on August 21, 2013 at 9:19 am

CC0 iconThe Creative Commons CC0 waiver will become part of the BioMed Central Copyright and License Agreement on Tuesday 3rd September. For articles submitted from this date, CC0 will apply to data in all articles published by BioMed Central or Chemistry Central journals.

So what do we mean by open data, what does the Creative Commons CC0 waiver cover, and why this is of interest to you?

Open data relates to the fact that the open communication of scientific research involves more than just the final results of research being published in an article in an open access journal. Sharing the underlying data is an increasingly important part of the research and publication process. BioMed Central aims to provide leadership in supporting scientific communities in the sharing of underlying scientific data, publishing it in standard formats, and supporting re-use and further analysis, which helps facilitate the discovery of new knowledge.

Our updated Copyright and License Agreement will mean that the Creative Commons CC0 waiver applies to data (e.g. in tables and additional files, graphical data points, and bibliographic data). CC0 is data-specific, and the Creative Commons attribution license (CC-BY) will continue to apply generally to articles published in BioMed Central journals.

This change to our standard copyright license will make published data clearly and unambiguously available for sharing, integration and re-use without legal restrictions, for the benefit of science. Attribution licenses have been strongly discouraged for scientific data as they may obstruct future sharing and integration of data on a large scale, such as was required for the Human Genome Project. At BioMed Central we believe that there is much valuable data in the published literature, for data mining and many other applications, and it should therefore be considered a scientific resource.

The change to our standard copyright license follows a public consultation we held in towards the end of 2012. Respondents to the consultation were six to one in favour of introducing the Creative Commons CC0 public domain waiver for data. As part of the consultation we also received a number of questions, such as the relevance for patient privacy or a potential effect on citations? We provide our answers in a new article published in BMC Research Notes.

BMC Medicine gave a lift to wine-lovers

Research in BMC Medicine gave a lift to wine-lovers, suggesting that two to seven glasses a week could reduce depression rates in middle-aged and older people. The PREDIMED study in Spain has recently shown benefits to health from eating nuts, and the new article was reported in the Daily Telegraph and ABC.es. And good news for the good hearted: volunteering is linked to increased longevity in a review article in BMC Public Health. Time and the Huffington Post both covered the article.

15th International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL 2013)

The 15th International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL 2013) is brought to you by the International School of Information Management, University of Mysore and held in Bangalore, India, during December 9-11, 2013. The venue is Hotel Le Meridien, Bangalore.

The theme of the conference is “Social Media and Community Networks”

Since its emergence in 2004, social media has become not just a rage but also an integral part of our daily lives and professional activities. Organisations—academic, government, and corporates, are increasingly veering towards social media for not only reaching out to but also to engage with their customers and other stakeholders. Libraries are no exceptions and libraries across the world are using social media to promote services, highlight resources, integrating access, and to listen to the voices of their users. Libraries, the traditional agencies for building local communities of practice are finding new ways to build virtual communities with the help of the social media and its tools.

ICADL 2013 offers a wonderful platform and brings a truly interdisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners of digital libraries with a focus on the theme of “ Social Media and Community Networks”

Whether you are a practitioner or a researcher in the library and information profession, here is a chance to retool and reposition your career and the profession by learning more about the new media and the emerging tools through tutorials, plenary sessions, keynotes, contributed papers, exhibits, posters and other events.

• Tutorials: ICADL 2013 offers an opportunity to familiarize oneself with cutting edge tools through its tutorials on the topics of Data Mining, Text Mining, and Social Network Analysis (http://www.isim.ac.in/icadl2013/tutorials.html)

• Contributed Papers: Our contributed papers showcase the current research trends in the field of digital libraries (http://www.isim.ac.in/icadl2013/Accepted_Papers_and_Posters.html)

• Talk-a-DL: We also have an innovative Talk-a-DL Programme-an Open House programme that offers a platform to delegates to share their thoughts and ask questions.

• IDLI@ICADL: IDLI( Indian Digital Library Initiatives at ICADL2013) is another programme feature providing an opportunity for organisations to showcase their innovation in digital libraries (http://www.isim.ac.in/icadl2013/idli.html)

• InfoQuiz 2013: One other interesting programme is InfoQuiz 2013. Please compete and win a trip to ICADL 2013! (http://www.isim.ac.in/icadl2013/infoquiz.html)

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Libraries are the knowledge storehouse and dissemination centres of all academic and research institutions.
The invention of printing press in 1440 and the advent of Internet in 1980’s brought out a paradigm shift in the Information Storage
and Retrieval  (ISR) and knowledge  dissemination. The 21st century witnessed new technologies such as internet, web, digital,
technologies, mobile, security technologies, search engines, social networking tools, cloud computing, which affected the  libraries.
Libraries are undergoing rapid and tremendous  changes now due to information explosion and user demand on one side and
